How to Use
For each course, pick the letter grade and enter the number of credit hours. Add a row for every class with the Add course button. Your GPA appears automatically, weighted by credits so heavier courses count more. Course names are optional and just help you keep track.
Why This Tool Is Useful
Your GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple average — a 4-credit class affects it more than a 1-credit class. That makes it easy to miscalculate by hand. This tool applies the standard 4.0 grade points and weights each course by its credit hours, so you get an accurate number for planning, checking scholarship or honor-roll thresholds, or seeing what grades you need next term.
How GPA Is Calculated
Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get 'quality points,' add those up across all courses, then divide by the total credit hours. The result is your GPA. Because it's weighted by credits, a high grade in a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course.
The 4.0 Scale
This calculator uses the most common unweighted 4.0 scale, where an A (and A+) is 4.0 and an F is 0.0, with pluses and minuses in between. Some high schools use a weighted scale that gives honors or AP classes extra points (up to 5.0), and some colleges treat A+ as 4.0 exactly — check your school's official scale if it differs.
Cumulative vs Semester GPA
A semester GPA covers one term's courses; a cumulative GPA covers everything you've taken. To estimate a cumulative GPA, enter all courses across terms. To model just this semester, enter only its classes. You can also test 'what if' scenarios by changing a grade and watching the GPA update.
